Pay transparency in a tight labor market. A good idea?

Mentioning wages in a vacancy text still seems taboo. And yet salary information is extremely important for many people, even decisive to click on the application button. More and more voices are being raised to state your salary transparently. It would not only help to find the right candidate faster and more sustainably. Pay transparency can also reduce discrimination in the workplace and help eliminate gender inequality.

Indeed has done research on this.

This shows that vacancies with pay transparency provide significantly more responses from suitable candidates, lower costs per application on average and lead to loyal and motivated employees.

We need to ask ourselves a couple of questions:

  • Should we break the salary taboo?
  • Does mentioning wages in your vacancy pay off?
  • Does it generate more applicants? And are they the ‘right’ applicants?
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of wage transparency?
  • Is it possible for every job?
  • What is the impact on your employer brand?
